14 Beaches to Visit in Syros Island
1. Agios Nikolaos – Asteria Beach
Admire the classical architecture of Syros’ old sea captain’s mansions as you swim in the crystal clear waters along the beachfront in the main town of Ermoupoli. More suited to swimming than sunbathing due to the lack of sand, you can dive into the crystal clear water from the rocks or climb down the pool steps, drying off on the stone platform as the locals do before grabbing a drink from the perfectly positioned Asteria cafe.
2. Azolimnos Beach
This sandy blue flag beach has 3 piers and is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas to rent and can be easily reached by public transport. Ideally located with lots of accommodation in the area, it also benefits from a choice of beach bars and tavernas serving up fresh fish.
3. Vary Beach aka Vari Beach
A popular tourist resort lined with tavernas and cafes offers another stretch of sandy blue flag beach to enjoy with the family. Partly organized with sunbeds and umbrellas plus beach volleyball it can be accessed by public transport and benefits from disabled access.
4. Megas Gialos Beach
This huge sandy beach is ideal if you’re with young kids as it has shallow waters. Organized with sunbeds and umbrellas with tavernas and everything else you might need nearby since it’s a tourist resort, it’s easily accessible by public transport but can get busy in the summer months.
5. Ampelas Beach aka Ambela Beach
This quiet bay with its picturesque tamarisk trees is one of the more secluded golden sand beaches on the island but still benefits from having umbrellas (some are free of charge) and a traditional taverna. Protected from the wind, it’s a small oasis on a hot summer’s day.
6. Komito Beach
This small sandy beach with sunbeds and umbrellas is breathtakingly beautiful and, with the exception of Sundays, is rarely busy thanks to its secluded location 15km southwest of Ermoupolis. Equipped with sunbeds and sun umbrellas plus the shade from tamarisk trees that back onto the beach this beach benefits from parking right beside the sand.
7. Agathopes Beach
Close to the tourist resort of Poseidonia, this partly organized blue flag beach with sunbeds and umbrellas to rent has shallow waters and boasts beach volleyball and a range of watersports whilst also catering to disabled visitors. Busy in the summer, there are traditional as well as chic tavernas/beach bars to choose from when you get hungry.
8. Voulgari Beach
Located between Posidonia and Finikas (both within walking distance) this sand and pebble beach (with rocks underfoot at the water’s edge) has trees as well as some free sunbeds for shade. Unorganized yet providing disabled access to the beach and water, you can dive from the concrete platform into the crystal-clear water before drying off and heading to either of the nearby villages for a snack.
9. Finikas Beach aka Foinikas Beach
Accessible by public transport, this organized sandy beach is the second largest on the island. A popular resort in the summer with a port, watersports, and plenty of tavernas and accommodation, the beach has sun loungers and umbrellas to rent with some available free of charge too. The calm waters and protection from the wind make it popular with families.
10. Galissas Beach
This large blue flag beach is partly organized and benefits from a lifeguard, disabled access, and beach volleyball plus a variety of watersports. Family-friendly, it’s the most popular beach on the island located just 9km from Ermoupolis and easily accessible by public transport.
Mostly protected from the wind it has fine sand and shallow waters with sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, a selection of tavernas, and should you get bored of people watching and gazing out to sea, you can climb up to the chapel of Agia Pakou to admire the view of the bay below.
11. Armeos Beach aka Agia Pakou
Located on the East side of the island, this secluded nudist-friendly beach is usually empty even in August and can be accessed via a path that goes over the hill from Galissas Beach past a picturesque chapel or by boat. Protected by cliffs, it has a mix of sand and pebbles underfoot and is unorganized without any tavernas, beach bars, or other facilities.
12. Kini Beach
Another blue flag beach organized with a lifeguard, sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas/beach bars, and nearby accommodation, Kini Beach is large with sand/pebbles and offers beach volleyball and watersports making it ideal for the younger crowd.
Located on the west of the island, it’s easy to reach by public transport. Explore the quaint fishing village before/after your swim and sunbath and be sure to stay to watch the incredible sunset – the view is to die for!
13. Delfini Beach
Although rather isolated making it nudist-friendly, this small sand and pebble beach is still easy to reach if you have a hire car and are ready for the unpaved road. Great for when you want to get away from the busier resort beaches and truly relax in paradise it has some sunbeds along with a beach bar selling drinks and snacks.
14. Lotos Beach
This secluded sandy bay with its shady tamarisk trees that back onto the sand is truly tranquil. Protected from the wind, it doesn’t have any facilities apart from a few free parasols for visitors to use so go prepared with enough drinks and snacks for the day and enjoy your time enjoying Mother Nature at her best.
