What to do and see at Firopotamos
Firopotamos is a small fishing village on the north side of the island, about 4 km away from the main settlement of Plaka. Getting there feels like traveling to the past. Around the beach, there are small houses of fishermen, with doors painted in various colors. In the water, some sloops bounce softly to the playful waves of the water. It is the best environment to relax and take some photos.
At the beach, the waters are crystal-clear and shallow. The water deepens smoothly as you enter the sea, and it is usually calm. There is sand with tiny pebbles everywhere, so no need for sea shoes unless your feet are sensitive. The environment is safe and family-friendly.
There is no café or canteen to buy snacks from, so it is better to come prepared with water and every supply you need. The beach does not have sunbeds and umbrellas. If you want comfort, you can bring a mat or a deck chair to lay and sunbathe. However, if you do not have this kind of equipment, there is no reason to worry; a few tamarisks are growing at the sides of the beach.
From the beach, you can climb the hill, which leads to a building that looks like an old castle. According to the locals, this is not a castle but an old mining factory. From there, you have a panoramic view of the sea and Firopotamos Cove.
The Chapel of Saint Nicholas
Nearby, you can admire the small white chapel of Saint Nicholas. According to tradition, he is the protector of the seamen. For that, in the Greek islands is common to find chapels in the memory of Saint Nicholas.
Around the chapel are terraces. This is the best place for those who enjoy the thrill of diving from highs. If you are one of them, you should not miss the opportunity. However, if you like to feel safer, you can dive from the steps that are a bit lower.
The ’Syrmata’ of Firopotamos
On the one side of Firopotamos, you can see the small settlement of Syrmata. ‘Syrmata’ are small rooms in the rock that the fishermen carved many years ago. These cavities were spaces for storing boats during winter to protect them from winds and waves. The opening is secured with big wooden doors that locals paint in different colors. Nowadays, Syrmata is one of the top attractions of Milos Island and a typical example of the local architecture.
Places to visit around Firopotamos
Close to the Firopotamos are two famous places on Milos Island, Mandrakia and Sarakiniko.
Sarakiniko is a beach surrounded by long greyish volcanic rocks that bend over the sea. The sea and the wind had eroded and smoothened the rock surface. People enjoy swimming in the turquoise waters and diving from the rocks. It is a twelve minutes’ drive from Firopotamos.
Mandrakia is a fishing village, about 4 km away from Firopotamos. It is a small traditional port with Syrmata, a picturesque chapel, and a tavern. It is worth a visit on your way to the nearby beaches.
How to get to Firopotamos
Access to the beach is easy but finding a parking spot might be a bit difficult. You get to Firopotamos from a steep downhill road. Usually, many cars are going up or down, and that makes the situation tricky. Who would expect to find traffic on this island?
