Yes, it is true! Some of Kefalonia’s beaches are at the top of beach rankings worldwide. In this article, I will give you all the tips for visiting the most famous of them, Myrtos Beach.
Once in Kefalonia, visit this beach. It is one of the island’s landmarks and is known for the very blue waters, the white pebbles of the cove, and the beautiful sunsets. Hundreds of tourists go there every summer, and they do not leave disappointed.
Myrtos Beach is on the north part of the island, about 30 kilometers from Argostoli, the biggest city of Kefalonia. Myrtos is awarded yearly with a blue flag. The Blue Flag is an award given to beaches that have exceptionally clean waters and well-preserved environments.

Visiting Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia
Discovering Myrtos Beach
Myrtos Beach belongs to the municipality of Sami. It is a 45-minute drive from Argostoli. As you drive on the winding road to get to the beach, one thing that catches your breath is the imposing view. You should stop, on your way there and admire Myrtos beach from above. Do not forget to take some pictures on the spot, to bring back home. For sure, one of the best views for some good Instagram pics.
Once at the beach, take a moment to admire the color of the water and the big white pebbles. Between May and October, the waters are very clear. The colors are magnetizing, and the only thing you want is to dive into this endless blue. Nevertheless, if you get there on a windy day the sea might be a bit wavier than expected.
It is always a good idea to check the weather forecast or ask the locals before going there. If, however, you get there on a windy day, make the best of the waves and discover your inner child as you play with them.
On one side of the beach, there is a small cave that has a little beach. You should check it out, even though it is usually busy.
The waters in Myrtos are deep. You can walk approximately two meters in the water, but after that, it gets deep, and therefore this is not the most kid-friendly beach. If you go there with your children, make sure they have their armbands or swimming rings on and never leave them unattended.
The bottom consists of white peddles, which give the water this unique blue color. The rocks, however, can be a bit troublesome for your feet. Having plastic beach shoes protects your feet from sharp rocks.
Myrtos Beach is one of the most popular locations on Kefalonia Island. For this reason, hordes of tourists get there every day, during the high tourist season. If you want to find a good spot at the beach, you should try to be there around 9.00 or 10.00 am. After that, it gets busy, and you might end up putting your umbrella quite far from the water.
Sunsets at Myrtos beach are an enchanting view. One should not miss the mystic atmosphere created by the pink and orange colors that fill the skies as the sun disappears into the ocean.
Services at Myrtos Beach
There are a few sunbeds and umbrellas in the middle of the beach, and you can rent them for 7 euros per set. It is, however, hard to find a free spot if you arrive after 10.30.
The beach is quite long, so there is plenty of space to put your umbrella if you bring one, so you do not need to fight for one spot at the organized part of the beach. There are no trees or rocks that can protect you from the sun, so you need the protection of an umbrella or a sun tent, especially in the afternoon when the sun is hot.
There is a small canteen at the beach, which is open until 17.30. You can get coffee, snacks, and water from there. There is also an installation of showers, changing rooms, and toilets, which is very helpful.
During the summer months, there are lifeguards at the beach who make sure that everyone is safe.
How to get to Myrtos Beach
Going to Myrtos Beach by car or taxi is always the fastest and easiest way. It takes 40-45 minutes. There is a public parking space above the beach. In the summer months, it gets full fast, so the best thing to do is to be at the beach early in the morning so that you find the best parking spot. You can also park your car on the sides of the road, but this might be a bit tricky. There are also people there who are responsible for the flow of vehicles and will help you park.

Every August, the municipality of Sami organizes a cultural festival named ‘Politistico Kalokairi’. Events take place in different locations around Sami, and often they choose to have some concerts at Myrtos beach.
