Apollonia is the capital of Sifnos island, taking its name after the God Apollo. This small town can be tranquil during summer days, but you can enjoy a night out in the evenings and try traditional delicacies at several restaurants. Another name that locals refer to is Stavri, which most likely comes from the Holy Cross Church in the middle of the village.

Visiting the Village of Apollonia in Sifnos
Apollonia doesn’t have a beach, but you can visit several places around the area and enjoy the island’s crystal-clear water. It is located very close to Artemonas and Ano Petali villages. The villages’ houses are traditionally white and blue; you can walk around the small streets, especially in the evening. Locals are amiable and will be delighted if you want to speak to them and find out more about the island.
How to get to Apollonia
You can get a bus from Kamares or Vathi to Apollonia. It should take around 30-40 minutes. Buses are every 2 hours, but the schedule can change in low seasons.
You can take a taxi, which will take you around 10 minutes from Kamares. The cost of the ride might be something between 10-15 euros. Again depends on the season.
Another option is to hire a car. Again with a car, you will get to Apollonia in about 10 minutes from Kamares, and prices vary for different car rentals. Vehicles in the village are not allowed. There is a designated parking area at the village entrance, where you can leave your car or motorbike. Vehicles in most streets in the village are only for pedestrians. You can always hike or ride a bike. Try to do it early in the morning or evening, as the sun can be extreme.
History of Apollonia
Apollonia has been the capital of the island since 1836. The village has an amphitheatrical shape around three hills. While there, you can visit many churches such as Agios Spiridonas, Panagia Ouranofora, and Agios Ioannis.
Also, you can find a Folklore Museum, where lots of exciting collections are exhibited, including textiles, costumes, and paintings. In Rambagas Square, there is a statue of militant journalist and satirical poet Kleanthis Triantafyllou, born in 1850 and who published the political and satirical magazine “Ramabagas.” Because of this, he was imprisoned twice and was a victim of assassination. In 1889 after suffering from a mental disorder, he committed suicide.

What to do near Apollonia
Sifnos has lots of churches and Apollonia does too. Most likely, you will get the chance to experience a church festival. Make sure you ask the locals about the festivals and visit one. You will be able to taste traditional chickpea soup and lamb with potatoes. Also, you can dance and sing with the locals until the early morning.
The most famous one is the festival on the top of the mountain of Profiti Ilias, and the locals walk up that mountain. The festival takes place on the 19th of July, the day before the church’s name celebration.
On the other hand, you can visit different beaches in Kamares and Vathi. They are not very far from Apollonia. Also, while you stay in the village, you will be able to discover lots of souvenir places. Another thing you can try is a pottery class. Sifnos is famous for its potters, so why don’t you find a pottery class where you can create your souvenir from clay?
The island of Sifnos is small, so getting around is easy and quick. So, staying in a hotel in this island’s capital and moving around is pretty straightforward. The best time to go is April-October; during these months, the weather is warm, and you shouldn’t experience any ferry delays due to weather conditions.
