A Guide to Zante Greece

Where is Zante/ Zakynthos?

Where is Zante island?

Everyone has seen a photograph of Zakynthos! The famous photograph of the gorgeous sandy Navagio Beach with its wooden shipwreck was taken on the island. Zakynthos is one of the Ionian islands, situated northwest of the Greek mainland.

The island is stunning with fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters and is a popular holiday destination for families. The island has good nightlife in Zakynthos town too.

How to get to Zante

There are direct flights to the island during the summer season from most European cities. Unfortunately, there is no direct ferry from Pireaus (Athens) to Zakynthos (a distance of 250km), but there is a ferry from Killini (Kyllini) on the western Peleponnese. Catch a bus (ktel) from Athens to Kilini and then the ferry across to Zakynthos – the boat trip takes about one hour and 15 minutes.

Check ferryhopper for the ferry timetable and to book your tickets.

The best time to visit Zante

This beautiful island has a Mediterranean climate so hot dry summers and mild winters.  During the summer – June- September- the temperature averages 30ºC, which is perfect for the beach.

If you prefer a more active holiday, March-May and September to early December are both lovely times to be in Zante, as the days are sunny and pleasantly warm. In January – March the temperatures do drop and there are rainy days and windy ones too so these months are best avoided!

How to get around Zante

There are local buses to nearly every part of the island! The central bus station is Zakynthos Town and timetables are available online. There are also a number of organized tours to the main attractions, with English-speaking guides. If you want more flexibility renting a car or motorbike is advisable.

I recommend booking a car through Discover Cars where you can compare all rental car agencies’ prices, and you can cancel or modify your booking for free. They also guarantee the best price. Click here for more information and to check the latest prices.

This is the most iconic beach on the island due to the famous shipwreck (a stranded freight liner) that lies on the white pebble/sand beach. You’re sure to have seen photos of it in travel brochures and around the web! The beach can only be accessed by boat and due to its popularity, becomes overly crowded in the high summer season as it’s only small.

If you’re a photographer or someone who seeks solitude, get a local fisherman to take you to the beach for sunrise or visit out of season.

Xigia Sulfur Beach

This picturesque white pebble beach requires a hike down many steps to get to but it’s well worth the effort as this beach has sulfur springs that turn the water a milky blue-white color. There’s no need to go to the spa to relax when nature can do it for you for free though you do need to be aware of the rotting egg smell – Don’t worry, you’ll soon get used to it!

Porto Roxa

This is a rocky cove rather than a beach with sand though it is still possible to lay down on the rocks and sunbath, or on a slightly more comfortable sun lounger that you can rent. Enjoy diving from the cliffs if you’re a bit of a daredevil, or make the most of the snorkelling opportunity in the deep water, just know that this place isn’t the best for young children.
