The most picturesque town in Syros is the capital, Ermoúpolis, also known as the “Lady of the Cyclades”, built amphitheatrically, overlooking the sea and the port. Its quaint, pastel-colored mansions and marble-paved streets create a cosmopolitan, fresh atmosphere, unlike any other Greek island.
Ermoúpolis has a distinct architectural beauty built by architects from many European countries including Italy, Germany, and Greece. This collage of neoclassical buildings with traditional Cycladic elements is a most beautiful combination.
While in Ermoúpolis, you can’t miss Miaouli Square with its palm tree, as well as the Vaporia Quarter and the Town Hall, which are also among its landmarks. The stunning churches of Ermoúpolis are works of art, including the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of Resurrection, and the Church of Agios Nikolaos.
If you want to explore the historical part of the island, head to the ancient Apollo Theatre and the Archaeological Museum, and don’t miss the Cycladic Art Museum and the Industrial Museum.
